Our activities range from serene walks through historic streets to hikes in nature’s embrace. Since each trip is custom-tailored for our small groups, the specific activities might vary, but the essence of movement always remains a central theme of our adventures.
In the setting of our retreats, we offer a special focus on Gyrokinesis® movement, expertly led by Maureen, the founder of Asheville Pilates. This practice is more than just exercise – it’s a journey of self-discovery and connection.
Engaging in mindful movements allows us to harmonize our bodies and minds with our surroundings. Each movement unfolds into an act of presence and connection, enabling a deeper appreciation for the culture, landscapes, and people encountered along the way.
From there, our itinerary takes us to an overnight heritage experience with the San people. We’ll learn about the history of Mankind as we spend time with Southern Africa’s oldest culture, one that dates back 20,000 years.
Off to Franschhoek village for a few nights, and some of the country’s excellent wine estates and gardens, where we’ll sample some local cuisine and picnic under the camphor trees of one of South Africa’s award-winning wine establishments. There will probably be an opportunity to enjoy some music at a local venue.
We’ll move on to a Nature Retreat Center in the Grootbos region of the Cape called Bodhi Khaya for 3 nights, where we’ll spend a few days of introspection, stretching, breathing, swimming (weather permitting), delicious vegetarian food (cooking demo included), and guided nature walks through unique ecosystems of the area, including Milkwood Forests and fynbos.
And then… safari! 3 nights at Idube, a private game reserve adjacent to the flagship Kruger National Park.
While here, we’ll enjoy:
After 3 days in the bush, we have the option to travel to the Victoria Falls in Zimbabwe, where we’ll:

This trip is the most incredible trip you will EVER take! My husband and I traveled to South Africa to the most beautiful landscape to meet the most beautiful people.
Can you imagine the mountains meeting the sea? The cool ocean breezes as the sun kisses your face is just the start.
The city of Cape Town has the kindest and happiest people. Touring District 6, the Slave Museum and visiting the Jewish and Muslim museums gives you the idea of how life used to be in this diverse city. Kirstenbosch Gardens is unparalleled. The fynbos (“fine bush”) is only found here in South Africa. You have never seen gardens like this!
Moving to the more rural area outside the city, we were able to spend a few days relaxing at Bodhi Khaya. With its vegetarian fare, (oh and did I mention how absolutely delicious the food was?!) we were well taken care of. Taking long walks through these lush gardens was a delight as well. The place just breathed rest, relax and enjoy. Writing, movement and a massage were a part of this internal experience. Who are you as you look toward the stars in this southern sky?
Franschhoek, wine, wine and more wine. Visiting the French region and the delicious wines that are created here was an absolute delight. Spending time at the wineries and getting a feel for this industry here, you get the sense that this region will continue to thrive and grow. Having an extraordinary picnic lunch with the mountain backdrop was a highlight. Finally the Safari! What?! How many times have you seen a giraffe in the wild?
How about elephants, hyenas, rhinos, and hippos to name a few. Sunrise and sunset excursions into the bush were unbelievable. My eyes could not even fathom what I was seeing. The accommodations were very luxurious with a nighttime dinner in the bush. Luxury meets mystery for sure! Maureen and Russel have put together a trip that everyone will enjoy. The guides were extremely knowledgable, and you will be exceptionally well taken care of. Why not go to a country where your hosts grew up? They know all of the best places to visit. Exceptional is the word.
My life has been changed forever. Thank you Maureen and Russel!
Maureen's deep knowledge of and passion for South Africa were evident in every phase of our thoughtfully curated two week journey: "Ignite Your Heart through the Lens of South Africa." The itinerary was impressive: four days in Cape Town and its immediate environs (Table Mountain, penguins, botanical gardens); meditation, movement, and silence at Bodhi Khaya Nature Retreat; picnics and wine tastings at the lush grounds of several wine estates; and jeep and walking safaris on a private reserve adjacent to Kruger National Park.
Each day brought new adventures and personal attention, whether the accommodations (lovely guest houses or small hotels), the meals (exquisite fresh cuisine), the surprises (e.g., African drumming around a blazing fire in the deep night at the retreat; the world premier of the play "The Promise;" whale watching along the cliffs near Hermanus), the variety of places visited, or Maureen's imperative that each of us experience her love of her home country.
South Africa is a place of contradictions: out-of-this-world beauty alongside extreme poverty. Maureen did not shy from exposing us to all aspects of this incredible country but tempered it by gently urging us to focus on the present and future of this place.
My heart was indeed ignited, my senses were amplified, my world was broadened--certainly the southernmost continent of Africa was a huge reason for these feelings, but Maureen was clearly the shepherd making it all happen for us.
South Africa was the vacation of a lifetime - our safari in Kruger National Park at the Idube Game Lodge was without a doubt our favorite part of the trip.
The beautiful city of Cape Town with iconic mountain ranges, ocean vistas and thrilling landscapes was breathtaking. The incredibly caring tour guides, the delicious food, the history we learned from our competent and friendly leader and friend, the amazing friends we made, along with the stunning beauty of Table Mountain, Hout Bay, botanical gardens, and the winelands, made this adventure hard to put into words – just amazing!
Vacationing with Maureen is like being wrapped in a favorite blanket. She brings so much comfort, caring, knowledge, joy, and laughter. We can’t wait for our next adventure with her.
Epic is the best word for me to use to describe my experience of our retreat and escapade in South Africa with Maureen and Russel Sher and an amazing group of adventurous, fun, and kind souls. South Africa is a magical and even mystical part of our world. It is like no other place in its depth of heritage and heart and believe me I have been to many parts of this world.
The ancient roots can be felt in the midst of the endless beauty of land, sea, mountains, skyscapes and gardens. It was breathtaking to be with the animals on safari as a true highlight of being in the richness of the animal kingdom in its natural habitat. Again, like no place outside of Africa. We even had a whale watch walk and saw South African penguins.
My heart smiles deeply when I think of any part of this extraordinary trip. It smiles especially when I think of the people of South Africa, as they are genuinely the most heart filled people I have ever had the privilege of meeting.
Maureen did an outstanding job with all the details, the care, and the fantastic variety of opportunities we were able to share in. What a treat it was to have EVERYTHING taken care of. The beauty wherever we were in the gardens, the natural landscapes, the views, the vineyards were world class is full of memories that I hold near and dear in my heart.
This trip is a highlight in my life that will live on and on. I am so happy for those who will follow in our footsteps and experience all that the heart of South Africa has to share with us
As a friend and colleague of Maureen's, I jumped on the chance to join the group trip to South Africa the moment she mentioned it! I knew every detail including all of the South Africa logistics and the itineraries planned, would be perfection.
I can say, without any hesitation, that any expectations I may have had were far exceeded! I couldn't believe that anything could top where we visited on each section of the trip, but it just kept building into the crescendo of the safari.
The beauty of the country, the very special people we met, and oh the food, made this a trip of a lifetime. Maureen was able to weave together a magical tapestry of experiences that showcased her beautiful homeland and the spirit and energy of Africa. This was a truly transformative experience - Just say yes!
A second trip to Africa in two years was not in my plans. However, the opportunity to travel with Maureen and her husband, natives of South Africa, made the trip very enticing. The itinerary was interesting and full of fun adventures.
Each place we visited was different and unique, allowing us a feel for the different parts of the country. Everyone on the trip was a joy to get to know, which enhanced the experience. I would sincerely recommend any trip hosted by Maureen and Russel.
I literally looked forward to the trip to South Africa for the better part of a year. It not only met my expectations but far exceeded them. Maureen and Russel planned the perfect itinerary for us, including perfect weather!! South Africa is a beautiful country with some of the friendliest, most welcoming people I have ever met.
This is truly a “bucket list” trip and I can’t recommend it strongly enough.
I can’t say enough about how much I enjoyed our adventure together to South Africa. This trip has exceeded my expectations in every way. I felt safe, cared for, thoroughly entertained and educated. You provided the perfect balance between planned activities and free time. The food was amazing and mostly the accommodations were comfortable and pleasant.
Highlights for me was the diversity between urban experiences in Cape Town including learning so much about Nelson Mandela, apartheid, District Six and the local culture. Mixed with that was hiking, botanical gardens, the beauty of the shoreline, penguins and so much more.
The Bodhi Khaya retreat center gave me a chance to wind down and be introspective, particularly after the trauma we all experienced due to hurricane Helene. Merle’s contribution in leading the writing exercises was particularly meaningful in addition to the tree planting and closing fire ceremony. The town of Franschhoek and the wineries were delightful and beautiful and I felt pampered. Of course the highlight was our stay at Idube Lodge in Sabi Sands. While the bush was dry and parched due to drought, we still were able to see so many animals in their wild habitat including lions, leopards, elephants, zebras, rhinos, giraffes and so much more. At sundown, we were treated to cocktails in the bush while experiencing the most gorgeous African sky.
All in all, I can’t say enough about how wonderfully planned this trip was. I am so grateful to Maureen and Russel for providing me a trip of a lifetime!
Our trip to South Africa with Maureen and Russel Sher, both of whom grew up there but now live in Asheville, N.C., was phenomenal. Why?
We experienced widely differing regions of the country: Capetown and the surrounding southern tip of Africa. At Bodhi Khaya, a Buddhist retreat center tucked into the depths of South Africa’s amazingly diverse landscape, we experienced a writing workshop, nature walks with an area botanist, and the best food I have ever eaten. Then onto more charming villages, some oceanside, others inland boasting grand vineyards. Our last days were spent on Safari, where seeing the magnificent animals within their own environment, was profoundly life changing.
We came face-to-face with the mind-blowing, soul-wrenching history of the South Africa people who have suffered oppressive foreign dominance for generations and are now struggling to find a way to stand on their own. I lost the ability to remain naïve or indifferent. I cannot explain it. I am changed. And I believe it was due to the variety of experiences incorporated into our South African tour.
I returned to a nation in upheaval, yet I feel more at peace within my own soul. I am newly able to live more in the moment without wrestling with how I had wanted my day to go. I’m planning less and doing more of what brings me joy and peace. Appreciating my loved ones more. I do not really know how this happened, I am just appreciating the unexpected personal effects of our two weeks in South Africa with Maureen, Russel and our guide, Wayne.

We cater to various dietary needs, including gluten-free options for guests. We also respect requests for no pork products in most meals.
October and November are summer months in South Africa. Expect a mix of hot days, cooler evenings, and occasional light showers. We recommend dressing in layers, including shorts, tees, light long cotton pants, jeans, long-sleeved shirts, a jumper or windbreaker, and a swimming costume (AKA swimsuit). Don’t forget a hat, sunblock, comfortable sandals, and walking shoes.
Whilst not every venue offers laundry services, it can be arranged along the way at a small cost. We suggest traveling light for your convenience.
While we typically choose low-risk malaria areas, there are certain times of year when mosquitoes may be more active. This includes during the summer due to the rain. The lodge provides mosquito nets and creams, but we recommend consulting your doctor about anti-malaria medication.
South Africa uses plug types C, D, M, and N, operating on a 230V supply voltage and 50Hz. While most hotels and lodges offer adapters, we recommend bringing your own for convenience.
The local currency is the South African Rand (ZAR). Credit cards, especially Visa and Mastercard, are widely accepted, and ATMs are readily available. You may need cash mainly for gratuities in urban areas, while lodges accept credit cards for gratuities.
Like any big city, Cape Town requires basic precautions against theft. Keep your belongings secure and avoid flashy jewelry. South Africans are generally very friendly and helpful, and our guides will ensure your safety and comfort.
Yes, the tap water in South Africa is delicious and perfectly safe to drink.
Your passport needs to be valid for at least 6 months after your return flight from South Africa. You also must have two blank pages facing each other available. South Africa doesn’t require vaccinations if one is coming directly from the USA. For more on vaccinations, consult with your doctor.
With a little bit of planning, it certainly will. You’ll have a few options: you can let your cell phone provider know you’ll be traveling abroad and buy one of their packages (often a set number of days), you can buy a SIM card locally, or you can download an eSIM card to your phone.
